“LEGO Launches Motorsport Team, Shifts Focus to Inspiring Diversity”

Published:

LEGO is set to make a unique entrance into the world of motorsport by launching their own racing team, diverging from the common pursuit of victory. The revelation of this new venture took place during the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where LEGO announced its collaboration with F1 Academy and its commitment to funding a motorsport team.

The upcoming LEGO Racing team will debut in the all-female series next year, receiving substantial backing from Formula 1 and its array of teams, including newcomer Cadillac. Esmee Kosterman, a talented Dutch driver, will take the wheel for LEGO Racing, aspiring to excel on the track. However, LEGO’s Chief Product and Marketing Officer, Julia Goldin, emphasized that their primary focus is on raising awareness and fostering excitement rather than solely chasing victories.

Goldin highlighted that while they hope for Kosterman’s success, the overarching goal is to promote the F1 Academy and its mission. The partnership aims to bring more attention to the championship, which, as Goldin noted, is still in its early stages of development. Susie Wolff, the CEO of F1 Academy, acknowledged the significance of LEGO’s substantial support, anticipating a positive impact on the championship’s growth and credibility.

LEGO’s collaboration with motorsport aims to address the shared challenge of engaging young girls and women in the sport. Beyond just sponsoring the team, LEGO is introducing buildable versions of the F1 Academy car, expanding its Speed Champions range to attract a new generation of female motorsport enthusiasts.

The integration of miniature LEGO cars with the real racing experience is expected to inspire young girls to explore the world of motorsport. This initiative aligns with the goal of encouraging diversity and inclusivity within the sport, ensuring that girls feel welcome and empowered to pursue their racing dreams.

Kosterman, who will race with the number 32 on her car, symbolizing LEGO’s founding year, acknowledges the significance of LEGO’s support in advancing her career. Despite the emphasis on broader goals by LEGO, Kosterman remains focused on achieving podium finishes and embracing the pressure that comes with competitive racing.

As the LEGO Racing team gears up for its debut, the collaboration between LEGO and F1 Academy signifies a new chapter in motorsport, emphasizing the importance of diversity, inclusion, and inspiring the next generation of female racers.
