What was meant to be a joyful celebration turned into a nightmare for a family of five back in 2015. The family was attending a graduation ceremony at a prestigious private school to mark the end of their eldest daughter Samira’s secondary education.
The school’s gymnasium was filled with numerous guests, including family, friends, and colleagues of Sandro, the father who taught English at the school. Tragically, later that day, seven-year-old Beatriz Angélica Mota was found dead within the school premises.
During the event, Beatriz requested her mother, Lucinha Mota, to allow her to go to a nearby water fountain for a drink. As the school was familiar to them, being both the children’s school and their father’s workplace, they felt at ease. However, when Beatriz did not return after about thirty minutes and could not be located, Sandro took the stage and paused the performances momentarily to call out for his missing daughter.
The search commenced promptly, with guests and staff joining in the efforts. It was around 11 pm when Beatriz’s lifeless body was discovered in an inactive sports kit storage room close to the gym. Reports from the Express indicated that she had been stabbed multiple times, with the murder weapon found near her.
Forensic experts later determined that Beatriz had not been killed in the room where she was found. The lack of evidence at the scene suggested that she had been murdered elsewhere and then moved to the storage room, which had become inaccessible to students in recent years.
Initial investigations revealed eyewitnesses had seen a man in a green top lingering near the water fountains just before Beatriz disappeared. Additionally, authorities confirmed that a set of keys granting access to various school areas had gone missing shortly before the incident. It was also discovered that the school’s CCTV systems had been tampered with, resulting in crucial footage being erased.
Months passed without resolution, prompting Beatriz’s father to criticize the police for impeding the investigation. He cited findings from a private detective hired by the family, alleging misconduct by some officers involved in the case. The family’s persistence in seeking justice led to rallies, media appearances, and a 430-mile trek to the state capital.
A breakthrough occurred in January 2022 when DNA recovered from the murder weapon was linked to Marcelo da Silva, who was already incarcerated for other crimes, including sexual assault. Marcelo confessed on camera, admitting to the attack on Beatriz, whom he encountered while attempting a robbery.
Despite the DNA evidence, Marcelo’s legal team has sought to prevent the case from going to trial, arguing lack of substantial evidence. However, a judge ruled to proceed to trial, highlighting forensic evidence suggesting a possible sexual motive behind the crime.
Lucinha Mota, now a federal congresswoman, continues to advocate for her daughter through various platforms, demanding justice for Beatriz. In a recent social media post, she reiterated her determination to ensure that the perpetrator faces the consequences of his actions.
