“Céline Dion Opens Up About Health Battle”

Published:

Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris by sharing more insights about her health battle and treatment journey. In an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar, the Canadian music icon revealed that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis in 2022. This rare neurological autoimmune disorder caused debilitating pain that intensified in 2020, making it challenging for her to even walk on some days, often relying on a high dose of Valium for relief.

Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that worsens over time, affecting only a small percentage of the population. Its symptoms include muscle stiffness and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. While there is no known cause or approved treatment specifically tailored for the disorder, various therapies can help manage its effects.

Prior to her diagnosis, Dion would commonly attribute show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the true extent of her suffering. She expressed feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her fans, acknowledging their unwavering support that enabled her to seek extensive treatment.

Following her diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining shows but is now preparing for her comeback in September. Her recovery routine comprises a combination of medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she engages in rigorous 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and ballet classes twice a week in anticipation of her upcoming performances.

Described as constantly on the move and fearful of stagnation, Dion views her recovery and return to the stage as nothing short of a miracle that she deeply appreciates. She emphasized the importance of cherishing the opportunities one has, highlighting her excitement, strength, and slight nervousness as she gears up for her Paris residency, featuring 26 concerts scheduled from September 12 to May 29 next year.
