Hurricane Lala weakened to a tropical storm on Sunday after skirting Hawaii without making landfall. However, it continued to impact the state with strong gusts and heavy rainfall, totaling nearly one meter in some areas and causing torrents of water to flow down mountain slopes.
Authorities launched a search-and-rescue operation involving Civil Defence, the National Guard, and a coast guard helicopter after flash floods reportedly swept several homes off their foundations in Na’alehu and Wai’ohinu coastal communities near the Big Island’s southern tip.
Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda described the rescue efforts as challenging due to rushing water, debris, boulders on roads, and dark conditions. Tragically, one person died in a vehicle accident in the South Point area of the Big Island.
Honolulu experienced severe weather conditions on Sunday morning as tropical storm effects spread across the island chain. The Honolulu Fire Department responded to numerous weather-related incidents, including downed trees, roofs, power lines, and a swimmer rescue.
Despite the U.S. National Hurricane Center downgrading the Big Island to a flood advisory, much of the state remained under a flash flood warning. Meteorologist Stephen Parker highlighted the risks of heavy rain, mudslides, downed trees, flooding, and power outages.
With over 200,000 homes and businesses without power, including two-thirds of customers on the Big Island, the impact of Hurricane Lala was significant. The storm brought powerful waves along the coast and strong winds, causing damage and disruptions across the state.
As the storm continued its path, tropical storm warnings were issued for multiple islands, raising concerns about potential flooding and wildfires due to strong winds. The forecast indicated that Lala could regain hurricane strength by midweek well away from the Hawaiian islands.
