“Lidl Introduces Self-Scanning App, Plans Wider Rollout”

Published:

Lidl has recently introduced a new self-scanning feature on its loyalty app, aiming to streamline the checkout process for customers. The update allows shoppers to scan items using their smartphones before making payments at the counter. This enhancement was initially tested in a trial run at four stores earlier in the year, with plans for a wider rollout in the coming year.

In line with this digital innovation, Lidl has filed a trademark application for “Lidl & Go” in Europe and the UK, focusing on digital payment and scan-and-shop systems within its stores. Shyam Unarket, the Customer Relations Director at Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance the shopping experience by offering more convenience and flexibility to customers.

Meanwhile, Lidl has secured the title of the cheapest supermarket, outpacing Aldi for the second time in recent months according to Which?. A comparison of a 70-item shopping list revealed that the average cost at Lidl was £120.46 in October or £120.38 for Lidl Plus members, whereas the same basket of goods at Aldi averaged £121. The analysis by Which? also highlighted that Aldi has been recognized as the most cost-effective supermarket 22 times in the last 24 months.

In contrast, Tesco customers would have spent £134.89 last month, or £133.38 with a Clubcard, while Sainsbury’s shoppers would have paid £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card. Notably, Aldi and Lidl were not included in the price comparison for a longer list of 187 items due to their smaller product range compared to other supermarkets.
