“Lidl Regains Title of Cheapest Supermarket”

Published:

Lidl has once again emerged as the most budget-friendly supermarket, surpassing Aldi in a recent study conducted by Which? This marks the second time in recent months that Lidl has claimed the title of the cheapest supermarket.

In October, a comparison of 70 items revealed that the average cost at Lidl was £120.46, dropping to £120.38 for members of their loyalty program, Lidl Plus. In contrast, an identical basket of goods at Aldi averaged £121.

According to Which? analysis, Aldi had previously held the title of the cheapest supermarket 22 out of the last 24 months. The selection of items in the comparison included both branded and own-label products such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For Tesco shoppers, the total bill amounted to £134.89 in the same period, or £133.38 with a Clubcard. Sainsbury’s shoppers faced a bill of £139.68, which could be reduced to £136.79 with a Nectar card.

A more extensive comparison by Which? involving 187 items excluded Aldi and Lidl due to their smaller product ranges compared to other supermarkets. Asda was identified as the most cost-effective option for a larger shopping list, priced at £469.11, while the same basket at Tesco with a Clubcard came to £476.11, and at Morrisons with a More loyalty card, it totaled £481.34.

Waitrose stood out as the priciest option for both small and large shopping lists in October. The Which? analysis factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts where applicable, excluding multi-buy promotions.

Reena Sewraz, the Retail Editor at Which?, highlighted Lidl’s achievement as the UK’s cheapest supermarket once again. She emphasized the importance of consumer choice, noting that selecting a supermarket wisely could lead to savings of up to 26%.

As concerns about rising food prices persist, especially with the holiday season approaching, the analysis underscores the value of comparison shopping. It emphasizes the potential for significant savings by simply opting for one supermarket over another.
