Lottery Winner’s Betrayal Leads to Prison Sentence

Published:

Police detained a man after discovering an issue on the back of his lottery ticket. The man thought he had won a substantial amount in the draw, but soon faced setbacks.

An unnamed individual participated in Spain’s Christmas lottery, aiming to secure the renowned ‘El Gordo’ prize. In 2013, the entire country eagerly awaited the draw offering a significant sum of money.

Upon the announcement of the winning numbers, the man believed he had secured €125,000 (£110k) along with a friend. However, this marked the start of a complex situation that eventually led to his arrest by Spain’s Supreme Court.

Christmas lotteries hold immense significance in Spain, with a high participation rate and substantial prize pool. Unfortunately, one individual’s win in 2012 turned into a legal dispute, as reported by Spanish media outlet AS.

Following the draw, the defendant enjoyed the winnings until facing legal repercussions in 2022. Accused of withholding half the prize money from his friend, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay over €50,000 (£44,000) to the plaintiff, including interest.

Both individuals jointly purchased a lottery ticket at a Tenerife gas station in December 2013. Although the defendant paid for the ticket, the plaintiff signed the back using a pen provided by station employees.

The courts learned that the defendant failed to honor the agreement to split the winnings, leading to the legal battle. Testimonies from the plaintiff and station staff corroborated the events surrounding the ticket purchase.

The defendant’s defense claimed the plaintiff signed without consent, but the court dismissed this as speculation. The court ruled the signature was a valid indication of the plaintiff’s participation in acquiring the ticket.
