Police Hunt for Arsonist Linked to Antisemitic Attack

Published:

Police are on the hunt for an individual believed to be linked to a recent firebombing incident, amidst ongoing concerns following the shootings at Bondi Beach in Australia. The antisemitic attack occurred shortly after a terror incident during a Chanukah celebration in Sydney. Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit detectives are actively seeking a suspected arsonist in connection with a suspicious car fire in St Kilda East.

Responding to reports of a car set ablaze on Balaclava Road early on December 25, emergency services discovered a vehicle with a Hanukkah-themed mobile billboard on its roof. Fortunately, no occupants were present in the car during the incident, although precautionary measures led to the evacuation of a woman and three children from the residence. Investigators have identified a person of interest in relation to the case.

Authorities are calling on John Argento, a 47-year-old individual with a history of deception-related offenses, to cooperate with Victoria Police in their inquiries. Described as 185cm tall, with a thin build, blue eyes, grey hair, and a fair complexion, Argento is believed to lead a transient lifestyle, frequenting areas within Melbourne.

While the arson is being treated as a targeted attack, there is no evidence suggesting a specific threat to the Jewish community from Argento. Detectives are also interested in speaking with Argento regarding a subsequent car break-in. Despite overnight search efforts by law enforcement units, no arrests have been made.

Continuing their investigation into the whereabouts of the suspect, authorities plan to conduct forensic analysis on the vehicle with the assistance of an arson chemist. Enhanced patrols in the vicinity aim to provide public reassurance. Witnesses, individuals with dashcam/CCTV footage, or any pertinent information are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Assistant Commissioner Chris Gilbert from the Southern Metro Region emphasized the gravity of the offense on the Jewish community and reassured ongoing prioritization of the investigation. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incidents, offering support to the affected communities and highlighting the need to combat such acts of hatred.
