A well-known political expert has indicated that the decline of Donald Trump might be underway amidst mounting concerns over authoritarianism in the United States.
Recent fatalities of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, both civilians shot by ICE agents, have led to increased apprehension regarding the state of democracy in the country.
Furthermore, the arrest of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort has exacerbated worries about the freedom of the press in America.
Nonetheless, political analyst Andrew Neil has put forward the idea that with mounting speculation surrounding Trump’s physical and mental health, his administration may be on a downward trajectory.
In a piece for the Daily Mail, Neil suggested that the increasing discontent among Republicans with Trump and his diminishing popularity could lead to more moderate political figures filling the void left by MAGA politics.
He remarked, “The decline of the Trump presidency is likely already in progress. If it concludes quietly and disappointingly rather than triumphantly, it will empower moderate Republicans to reassert themselves, prompting Democrats to stay within the mainstream rather than veer left.”
Neil, a former BBC and GB News journalist, added that even if Trump exits office, his style of political maneuvering will have a lasting impact on America.
He stated, “A return to the pre-Trump American political landscape is improbable. However, America does not need to be trapped indefinitely in the current turbulence.”
Neil’s comments followed the arrest of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort earlier this week, which has raised concerns among press freedom advocates who have since responded to the detentions.
Lemon was detained on allegations of violating federal law while covering a protest at a church in Minnesota. The justice department accused Lemon and three others of disrupting religious freedom at the place of worship, allegations Lemon denies.
Georgia Fort, another journalist detained, posted a video on social media showing federal agents outside her home. Upon release, Lemon affirmed his dedication to reporting the news.
He declared, “I have devoted my entire career to reporting the news. I will not halt now. The first amendment of the US Constitution protects this work for me and numerous other journalists like me. I stand with all of them and will not be silenced. I anticipate my day in court.”
Meanwhile, the Guardian reported that press freedom organizations in the USA have condemned the arrests. Scott Griffen, Executive Director of the International Press Institute, remarked, “The arrests of two independent journalists doing their jobs is a shocking and troubling escalation of the Trump administration’s assault on the free press in America.”
“This is a direct attack on the first amendment and the American people’s right to information. The outcome of this case will directly impact the future of independent media and free information in America.”
