A man suspected of shoplifting in Canton, Ohio, was caught on camera allegedly trying to shoot a police officer at close range. Shane Newman, 21, and Katrina Jeffrey, 23, were apprehended by officers after leaving a store with unpaid items. Newman was searched by police, who found illegal drugs in his possession. Moments later, Newman attempted to use a gun against the officer, but the weapon malfunctioned. A security guard intervened, disarmed Newman, and subdued him with assistance from colleagues.
Newman now faces serious charges, including attempted murder, assault on a peace officer, robbery, and drug possession. Due to his criminal record, he is also charged with illegal possession of weapons. He is currently being held in Stark County jail. Additionally, two 9mm rounds were discovered in Jeffrey’s pocket, leading to charges of complicity in robbery and illegal possession of ammunition. Canton Police chief John Gabbard emphasized the ongoing risk faced by law enforcement officers and expressed gratitude for the community’s support and prayers.
