Sky Sports Host Opens Up About Cancer Battle

Published:

Sky Sports host Jo Wilson has shared her experience battling cancer, expressing her initial fears of death and the emotional journey she endured upon receiving the diagnosis. At 41 years old, Wilson was diagnosed with cervical cancer in June 2022 following a routine smear test. Although she has been cancer-free for two years now, her journey was marked by the discovery that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, necessitating six weeks of intensive treatment before she received the all-clear in June 2023.

Having been with Sky Sports since 2011, Wilson underwent radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and brachytherapy to combat the cancer. While these treatments saved her life, they also induced early menopause, significantly impacting her career as a presenter.

The diagnosis came just two years after Wilson welcomed her daughter Mabel in 2020. In a new documentary called “Football, Cancer, and Me” on Sky Sports News, Wilson revealed the internal struggle she faced, choosing not to burden others with her condition while grappling with the possibility of death.

Wilson’s story is part of a broader narrative in the documentary, where she engages in conversations with colleagues like Emma Saunders and former manager Tony Mowbray, both of whom have faced their own battles with cancer. Mowbray disclosed his battle with bowel cancer, while Saunders underwent surgery for a brain infection following a thyroid cancer diagnosis, leaving her partner shocked by the visible scar.

Reflecting on her experience, Wilson emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention if something feels amiss, hoping her story prompts others to take action. The documentary sheds light on the personal struggles of individuals in the sports industry facing health challenges and the resilience required to navigate such circumstances.

Additionally, Sky announced a reduced price for its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the upcoming 2025/26 season, offering a substantial discount and access to over 1,400 live matches across various sports leagues. The package includes a minimum of 215 live Premier League games per season, along with coverage of Formula 1, darts, golf, and more, catering to sports enthusiasts looking for comprehensive live coverage.
