Ellen Halbert endured a terrifying assault in her residence in Texas when an unnoticed 18-year-old intruder entered and attacked her with a large hammer and knife. This life-altering event took place in 1986 when the attacker, disguised in a ‘ninja suit,’ hid in her attic, waiting for her family to depart. Seizing the opportunity when her husband left for work and her son was out at a friend’s house, Halbert decided to shower. Upon exiting the shower, she encountered the assailant face to face, armed with a massive hammer and an exceptionally large knife. Despite her instinct to command him to leave, he overpowered her, tied her up, and subjected her to a two-hour ordeal of violence, including rape, multiple stabbings, and hammer blows.
The assailant did not stop there, inflicting additional stab wounds on her neck and chest before delivering a brutal blow by stabbing her in the head. Left for dead with an 800-dollar check he coerced her to write, he assumed his final strike had been lethal. Miraculously, Halbert managed to survive, summoning help by reaching a phone to call her parents, who promptly contacted the authorities. The attacker was soon apprehended when he attempted to cash the check he had forced her to write.
The aftermath of the attack led to a challenging recovery journey for Halbert, involving extensive surgeries to address the injuries sustained on her head and neck. In addition to physical wounds, she grappled with stress-related ailments due to the trauma endured. Halbert expressed the profound impact of the violence, recounting months of emotional turmoil and struggle to cope with the aftermath.
Subsequently, the case proceeded to court, where Halbert bravely testified against her assailant, leading to his conviction for attempted murder. Despite the absence of rape charges, the attacker received a life sentence. However, the road to recovery for Halbert was arduous, marked by the dissolution of her marriage and job loss, compounded by the lasting trauma from the ordeal. Through connecting with fellow survivors and engaging in therapy, she gradually regained her strength and resilience.
Driven by her harrowing experience, Halbert dedicated herself to advocating for victims of violent crimes, culminating in her appointment to the Texas Board of Criminal Justice. Collaborating with the Bridges to Life program, she empowered survivors to share their stories with inmates, fostering understanding of the repercussions of violent acts on victims and their loved ones.
