A recent report from Which? reveals that approximately 21 million individuals in the UK may still be using Windows 10 on their laptops or computers, highlighting the significant number of devices at risk. Alarmingly, Which? found that 26% of Windows 10 users intend to stick with the operating system beyond the support cutoff.
Once Microsoft ceases free support, there will be no more security updates or critical patches for Windows 10, significantly increasing the risk for devices still running this OS.
According to Which?, hackers often target unsupported software like Windows 10 to exploit vulnerabilities and steal data, emphasizing the importance of upgrading promptly to stay protected.
“Our research indicates that many users may not be prepared for the end of support for Windows 10 next week. If you have a Windows device, it is crucial to check your OS version now. If it’s Windows 10 or older, take action to secure your device,” stated Lisa Barber, Editor of Which? Tech.
Which? advises users to upgrade to Windows 11 if their device supports it, as the transition is free and seamless. Alternatively, users can opt for the free one-year extension of Windows 10 through Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program to buy time for considering long-term solutions.
It’s important to note that users must actively enroll in the one-year extension, either by backing up Windows settings to OneDrive, redeeming Microsoft loyalty points, or paying a one-time fee.
If users decide to switch to a new device running Windows 11, they should also plan how to handle their old PC or laptop.
