Four individuals, including a child, sustained injuries in a significant cable car accident in Italy. The incident took place at the Monte Moro station in Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Italy, at an altitude of approximately 9,000 feet, leaving around 100 people stranded after the collision involving two cable cars earlier today.
The injured parties were promptly rescued by a doctor and a nurse who were present in the vicinity at the time of the accident. One of the cable cars crashed into the mountain station structure, while the other collided with the valley station, as confirmed by the local fire brigade.
Filippo Besozzi, the Director of Macugnaga Trasporti e Servizi, addressed the crash, attributing it to a technical malfunction. He explained that the cable car failed to decelerate adequately upon entering the station, leading to contact with the safety barriers.
Regarding the passengers on board the ascending cable car, which had approximately fifteen individuals, one person sustained an arm injury while the rest suffered minor injuries. Emergency services promptly attended to the injured, with the challenge now being the evacuation of 94 individuals at the Basso Moro station without any immediate emergency.
In a separate incident earlier this month, a San Francisco cable car abruptly stopped, resulting in injuries to 15 individuals, ranging from minor to moderate. The San Francisco Fire Department reported that two individuals were transported to hospitals immediately, while the others received treatment for minor discomfort.
Cable cars are a popular tourist attraction, famously depicted in a Tony Bennett song about San Francisco. These iconic modes of transportation have been operational in San Francisco since the 1870s and were designated as a National Historic Landmark in the 1960s, with three cable car lines operating in the city today.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, responsible for the cable cars, emphasized passenger safety as their top priority and announced plans for a comprehensive review of the incident details to ensure continued safety on the cable cars.
