“Former Labour Party Adviser Sues Trump Admin Over Visa Sanctions”

Published:

A former adviser to the Labour Party has initiated legal proceedings against the administration of Donald Trump after being among five Europeans subjected to visa sanctions by the United States.

Imran Ahmed, who is a close associate of Keir Starmer’s top adviser in No10, Morgan McSweeney, was singled out by the US due to his involvement with the Centre of Countering Digital Hate (CDHC). US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Mr. Ahmed of spearheading efforts to pressure American platforms to censor viewpoints they disagree with, resulting in his restriction from entering the US.

Mr. Ahmed has filed a lawsuit against Marco Rubio, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, alleging an unconstitutional attempt to apprehend and expel him from the United States.

Expressing his stance, Mr. Ahmed stated, “My life’s work revolves around safeguarding children from the perils of unregulated social media and AI and combating online antisemitism. Despite being at odds with big tech executives, including Elon Musk, I take pride in calling the United States my home. Rather than celebrating Christmas with my American wife and daughter, I am battling to prevent my wrongful deportation.”

The former Labour Party adviser from Manchester serves as the chief executive of the CCDH, which previously listed Mr. McSweeney as a director until his resignation upon Mr. Starmer assuming leadership of the Labour Party in April 2020.

The legal filing argues that Mr. Ahmed, a lawful permanent resident residing in the US with his American wife and child, is facing repercussions for the investigative work conducted by CCDH, which scrutinizes social media companies’ policies, including those of Elon Musk’s X.

Roberta Kaplan, representing Mr. Ahmed, commented, “Instead of enjoying Christmas with his family, he is compelled to contest his unjust deportation. There are few things more un-American than this situation.”

Shortly after midnight in the US, a United States District Judge granted Imran Ahmed a temporary restraining order against the decision, halting any potential arrest or detention.

Mr. Ahmed, in a previous interview with the Triggernometry podcast, revealed that the genesis of CCDH occurred during his tenure as an adviser to Labour MP Hilary Benn, then Shadow Foreign Secretary. Following the surge of antisemitism within the left-wing in the UK and the tragic death of his colleague Jo Cox MP at the hands of a white supremacist, he was motivated to establish the organization.

Another British-based executive, Clare Melford, who oversees the Global Disinformation Index (GDI), was also among the five Europeans prohibited from entering the US. A GDI spokesperson denounced the visa sanctions as an authoritarian assault on free speech and an act of governmental censorship.
