“UK Transitioning to Full Fibre: Millions Urged to Upgrade”

Published:

The transition in the UK from old-fashioned copper phone and broadband lines to advanced full fibre technology is rapidly gaining momentum. Millions have already migrated to this enhanced connectivity in the past year, and more households are soon to be compelled to switch from copper cables.

BT’s Openreach has confirmed that 1.2 million properties will be impacted by the “Stop Sell” alerts, with an additional 132 locations now added to the list of areas reaching the end of traditional service life.

When a Stop Sell directive is activated at a telephone exchange, internet service providers reliant on Openreach’s network, such as BT, Sky, TalkTalk, and Vodafone, are prohibited from offering conventional copper-based phone and broadband services in regions where full fibre is accessible.

Consequently, individuals signing new contracts or renewing existing ones will need to transition to fibre broadband. This change also affects conventional landlines, which are gradually being phased out as customers are transferred to Digital Voice services. Digital Voice facilitates calls over an internet connection rather than the dated wires still visible on many streets.

Although some elderly and vulnerable customers have expressed apprehension about the switch, Digital Voice boasts superior call quality and added functionalities like spam call blocking and call forwarding to mobile devices.

Openreach has emphasized that customers without full fibre access will not be impacted. They can continue using their existing copper-based services until full fibre is accessible in their vicinity.

James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, commented on the development, highlighting the significance of the stop sell initiative in propelling the UK toward a modern full fibre era. Retiring legacy copper services where full fibre is widely available aids in transitioning customers and providers to faster, more dependable digital infrastructure, reducing operational costs and complexity while aligning with the industry-wide shift preceding the imminent shutdown of the outdated PSTN phone network.

To ascertain the services available in your area, utilize the Openreach postcode checker to determine if full fibre has been rolled out.
