“Arctic Blast: -9C Chill to Grip 12 Regions in New Year”

Published:

The upcoming new year is expected to kick off with a frigid -9C chill spreading across the nation in the next few days. Weather forecasts from WXcharts indicate that the start of 2026 will bring bitterly cold conditions to 12 regions throughout the country.

Throughout December, heavy rain and mild westerly or southerly winds have prevailed due to a dominant low-pressure system. However, this pattern is set to change drastically as temperatures are projected to plummet below freezing levels, as indicated by the shift to icy blue on weather charts.

On January 3, temperatures are anticipated to drop significantly, with some areas barely reaching above 0C. Scotland, particularly the Highlands and Perth and Kinross, are bracing for wintry lows of -9C at 3am. Other regions in Scotland, such as Stirling and Argyll and Bute, could experience temperatures as low as -8C, with temperatures ranging from -2C to -4C in various parts of the country.

In regions south of the border, including Yorkshire and the Humber, the North West, and North Wales, temperatures could plummet to -4C. Cardiff and Swansea may experience a chilly -1C, while milder areas like London, the South West, and East of England are forecasted to see temperatures hovering between -2C and -1C.

As morning approaches, the cold snap is expected to persist, with significant drops in temperatures across Scotland. Perth and Kinross may face bone-chilling lows of -8C, while the Scottish Highlands could endure a brutal -4C. In the North East, including cities like Newcastle and Sunderland, temperatures could plummet to -5C, with similar conditions expected in Yorkshire and the Humber.

The Met Office has issued a weather outlook warning of “below average temperatures” from December 26 to January 4. The forecast suggests that high pressure will dominate the weather leading up to the New Year, resulting in settled conditions with a chance of showers later on. Temperatures are expected to remain below average, with frost likely in areas where skies are clear and winds are light.
