In today’s world, broadband has become a crucial aspect of daily life, facilitating activities like streaming entertainment, remote work, home security through internet-connected cameras, and managing smart home devices such as lights and thermostats.
The demand for fast and reliable internet access is on the rise as households integrate more internet-connected gadgets and consume increasing amounts of online content. While a robust broadband connection is essential, not all internet service providers (ISPs) offer the same level of performance.
According to SpeedGo, a newly established broadband speed-testing service, Virgin Media leads in the UK with an impressive average download speed of 256.5Mbps. This speed allows downloading a full HD movie in just over two minutes, significantly faster than the national average.
Following Virgin Media, Vodafone holds the second position with an average download speed of 175Mbps, trailed by BT (EE). TalkTalk ranks at the bottom with an average speed of nearly 95Mbps.
The average download speeds of major UK ISPs are as follows:
– Virgin Media: 256.5Mbps
– Vodafone: 175.1Mbps
– BT (EE): 122.5Mbps
– Sky Broadband: 113.6Mbps
– TalkTalk: 94.7Mbps
In addition to download speeds, SpeedGo also evaluated upload speeds, crucial for users who frequently send large files or work remotely. Vodafone leads in this category with an average upload speed of 83.6Mbps, surpassing Virgin Media, which secures the second spot with 47.2Mbps.
SpeedGo confirmed the results by stating, “In 2025, Virgin Media delivered the fastest broadband internet in the United Kingdom with an average download speed of 256.5Mbps. Vodafone achieved the highest average upload speed at 83.6Mbps.”
