“UK and France Troop Deployment in Ukraine Alters Putin’s Calculus”

Published:

The recent commitment by the UK and France to deploy troops in Ukraine has been described by a former Russian Prime Minister as a game-changer that has left Vladimir Putin uncertain about his next steps.

Mikhail Kasyanov highlighted that the coalition’s actions have put pressure on the Russian leader, particularly after Keir Starmer’s announcement regarding potential military installations in Ukraine if a peace agreement is established.

Kasyanov emphasized that the move in Paris by the coalition of willing nations has altered the dynamics and separated the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine, signaling a significant shift in approach.

He pointed out that the reaffirmation of transatlantic unity and the presence of troops on the ground have further added to Putin’s dilemma, leaving him unsure of how to respond.

The joint declaration signed by the UK, France, and Ukraine includes plans to construct secure facilities for weaponry and military equipment to assist in Ukraine’s defense post-ceasefire.

On the other hand, Dmitry Rogozin, a close aide to Vladimir Putin, criticized Starmer for proposing the deployment of British troops in Ukraine, warning of potential consequences such as missile strikes from Russia.

Furthermore, Donald Trump’s representative, Steve Witkoff, expressed the US President’s support for security guarantees and readiness to prevent Russian aggression and support Ukraine if necessary.

The proposed blueprint outlines the formation of a multinational force led by European countries, with potential involvement from non-European nations, including support from the US.

Key elements of the declaration involve participation in a US-led ceasefire monitoring initiative, ongoing backing for the Ukrainian military, and assistance for Kyiv in case of future Russian incursions.

In response, Keir Starmer emphasized the significance of international collaboration for peace efforts, noting the progress made but acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead.
