Sultan Kosen, the world’s tallest living man at 8 feet 2 inches (243cm), holds the Guinness World Record since 2009. The 43-year-old from Ankara, Turkey, surpassed the previous record-holder, Xi Shun, by being the first person over eight feet tall in over two decades. Sultan’s exceptional height, evident since childhood when he measured over 5 feet at age nine, has presented both physical and psychological challenges.
Despite his towering stature, Sultan faced ostracism from his peers during his youth, leading to feelings of isolation and shame. His height also caused vision problems, eventually traced to a pituitary gland tumor. After undergoing multiple surgeries to address the tumor, Sultan’s height continued to increase, solidifying his status as the world’s tallest man with the largest hands and feet.
While the Guinness World Record brought him a sense of acceptance and global recognition, Sultan’s height poses practical challenges in daily life. Traveling, in particular, requires special accommodations due to his size, including the need for spacious vehicles and custom sleeping arrangements in hotels.
Although Sultan now enjoys fame and a wide network of friends worldwide, his record briefly faced a challenge in 2023 when Sulemana Abdul Samed from Ghana claimed a taller height. However, discrepancies in measurement methods ultimately confirmed Sultan’s status as the world’s tallest man.
