The leader of the Labour Party has issued a warning to Vladimir Putin, stating that the UK Government is closely monitoring Russian activities in British waters following the sighting of a mysterious vessel in the Channel.
Anna Turley emphasized that Keir Starmer is actively collaborating with international partners to address such concerns. An oil tanker named Tavian was observed heading towards Finland, passing 20 miles north of Guernsey in the early morning, based on tracking data.
Suspicions have arisen that Tavian may be linked to Vladimir Putin’s clandestine fleet, allegedly utilized to circumvent restrictions on Russian oil trade.
Labour Party chair Ms. Turley, in an interview with Sky News, expressed pride in the proactive stance taken by Keir Starmer in engaging with the international community, particularly in supporting Ukraine. She stressed the importance of upholding international law and ensuring the safety of citizens by monitoring Russia’s activities in the region.
These developments unfolded shortly after the UK provided assistance to the US in intercepting a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander highlighted the vessel’s role in financing Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, labeling it a part of the shadow fleet.
The UK’s collaboration with allies, such as the US, to counter Russian attempts to bypass sanctions was deemed appropriate and necessary by Alexander. The operation to seize the tanker involved RAF surveillance aircraft and the naval supply ship RFA Tideforce.
Following the successful operation, which involved US special operations aircraft, the US military’s European Command expressed gratitude to the UK for its steadfast support.
Douglas Alexander, speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, reiterated the ship’s connection to funding Russia’s activities in Ukraine and stressed the importance of preventing illicit financing that fuels conflicts. He emphasized the need for international cooperation to combat Russian attempts to evade sanctions.
Efforts are ongoing to disrupt channels of financing supporting Putin’s military operations, with authorities in the UK and other countries actively working towards this goal.
