The family of a grandfather who passed away six days following an assault outside a rural pub has released a touching tribute. David Darke, known as Dave to loved ones, succumbed to his injuries after the incident at The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire, on December 21.
The 66-year-old sustained a severe head injury and was swiftly transported to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he later died. A 36-year-old suspect, who was re-apprehended on suspicion of murder, is currently in police custody.
In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Darke’s family expressed, “Dave was a cherished father to three daughters and a proud grandfather to three grandsons. He was a beloved brother and a dear friend. Dave’s memory will endure in our hearts, thoughts, and spirits. He was a resilient, vibrant, intelligent, and compassionate individual who was a friend to all.”
“He was a dedicated family man with a profound love for life, the outdoors, nature, and hiking. His life was tragically cut short, and he is now reunited with his caring parents. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and cared for him.”
A spokesperson from Leicestershire Police mentioned, “The investigation into Mr. Darke’s demise, managed by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), is ongoing. We are appealing to anyone with information to come forward if they have not already spoken to the authorities.”
Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, part of the East Midlands Special Operation Murder Investigation Team, stated, “The initial inquiry led us to identify numerous witnesses and review CCTV footage from the vicinity. These investigations will persist, and the suspect will undergo further questioning by detectives. This is an extremely challenging period for Mr. Darke’s family, and specialized officers are providing them with support.”
“We continue to urge individuals who were in Church Street last Sunday evening and have not yet engaged with law enforcement to reach out. It is crucial that we speak to all potential witnesses to piece together the events of that evening.”
