“Matches Fashion Set for Dynamic Revival Under New Ownership”

Published:

Matches Fashion is poised for a comeback next year after being acquired post-administration. The upscale fashion retailer faced a collapse in March 2024, reportedly owing over £210 million to renowned designer brands like Gucci and Anya Hindmarch.

Previously under the ownership of Frasers Group, which had purchased the business for £52 million from Apax Partners’ subsidiary MF Intermediate Limited, Matches is now in the hands of Joe Wilkinson and Mario Maher, the founders of luxury shopping app Mile. They have obtained Matches along with its in-house label Raey, which will be integrated into the newly formed luxury group, Hulcan, according to Vogue Business.

Maher emphasized the intention to preserve Matches’ legacy of curation, exclusivity, and quality products, while also introducing new elements to the brand. Wilkinson highlighted the significance of merging brands, media, and technology to create a futuristic luxury ecosystem that enhances the way people engage with brands.

Matches, known for its online presence and a few physical stores in London, faced financial challenges leading to its collapse, with Frasers Group disclosing losses and operational difficulties. Despite efforts to stabilize the business, it became apparent that significant restructuring and financial support beyond feasibility were necessary, culminating in the decision to place Matches under administration.

Frasers reaffirmed its dedication to the luxury market and its brand associates while acknowledging the circumstances that led to Matches’ administration.
