I extend warm New Year wishes to all Mirror readers. Regardless of how you celebrate, I hope it brings joy!
The year 2025 was marked by notable achievements. The Lionesses secured a remarkable victory in the Euros. The Red Roses triumphed in the women’s Rugby World Cup. Scotland’s exceptional qualification for the World Cup stood out. However, for many, it remained a challenging year. Recognizing the hard work of Mirror readers, I acknowledge the desire for simple luxuries like dining out, vacations, or new gadgets.
Therefore, my message for this year is clear: 2026 will herald the promised changes. Expect improvements in your finances, communities, and public services. Anticipate increased police presence, closure of asylum accommodations, and opening of new health facilities in your area. Community investments in parks, piers, and youth clubs will enhance local pride. Workers will gain new rights, and renters will benefit in their housing situations. Moreover, a significant decrease in child poverty is on the horizon.
Recently, a nine-year-old girl from Scotland handed me a note detailing the harsh realities of child poverty. It was poignant to witness such insight from a child and alarming to realize that a large number of impoverished British children come from working families struggling to make ends meet.
Our commitment this year involves uplifting over half a million children out of poverty by eliminating the two-child benefit limit, expanding free school meals, and addressing the soaring cost of living.
Ensuring financial stability for the country is crucial. This stability enables us to support individuals with living expenses and provide financial relief. Measures like freezing rail fares, prescription costs, and fuel duties, reducing energy bills, lowering childcare expenses, and boosting the national minimum wage demonstrate our dedication to aiding working families.
Revitalizing our nation is a gradual process, but progress is evident. Each positive change signifies a reversal of decline, a restoration of opportunity and pride, and a brighter future for families.
In the realm of politics, the concept of hope has been somewhat forgotten. Let 2026 be the year we rediscover hope, showcasing the true essence of Britain and fostering a sense of confidence in the future.
