Elon Musk shared his vision for the future of work and the role of robots and AI. The billionaire predicted that work will become optional, comparing it to tending a vegetable garden. Speaking at the recent US-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington DC, Musk stated that work will be akin to playing sports or video games, where individuals can choose whether to engage in it. He forecasted a potential shift in the next 10 to 20 years as millions of robots join the workforce, leading to increased productivity.
Despite Musk’s optimistic outlook, economists raise concerns about the feasibility of his vision. Ioana Marinescu, an economist from the University of Pennsylvania, acknowledged the potential for full-scale automation but questioned the timeline proposed by Musk. She emphasized the historical challenges in technological advancements and the uncertainties surrounding the impact of mass automation on the global workforce.
While Musk has a track record of bold predictions, including manned missions to Mars and mass driverless vehicles, some of these projections have not materialized. Nevertheless, he remains hopeful about the future, suggesting that significant advancements, such as AI extending human lifespans, are within reach.
