John Virgo, an iconic snooker commentator, has passed away at the age of 79. Known as the voice of the sport, Virgo made his final appearance on the BBC during last month’s Masters tournament. Originally from Salford, Virgo had a successful career as a player, clinching the UK Championship title in 1979. He passed away in Spain, where he resided.

The news of Virgo’s passing was confirmed by World Seniors Snooker chairman Jason Francis on social media, expressing heartfelt condolences to Virgo’s family. The BBC also released a statement mourning the loss of the snooker legend. The World Snooker Tour expressed deep sadness over Virgo’s death, extending condolences to his family and loved ones.

Fellow snooker icons, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Stephen Hendry, Shaun Murphy, and Neil Robertson, paid tribute to Virgo, highlighting his impact on the sport. Virgo, who retired from playing in 1994, became renowned for his commentary, earning a spot in the World Snooker Tour Hall of Fame. His famous catchphrase, “Where’s the cue ball going?” and his flamboyant style left a lasting legacy in the snooker world.

Virgo’s contribution to snooker extended beyond commentary, as he famously hosted the BBC’s snooker program, Big Break, alongside Jim Davidson. Colleagues and friends remembered Virgo for his talent, humor, and dedication to the sport. His move to Spain with his wife Rosie aimed to improve his health following a long-term neck injury.

In 2017, Virgo candidly discussed his gambling addiction in an interview with Mirror Sport. Survived by his son, Gary, and daughter, Brook-Leah, from previous marriages, Virgo’s passing marks a significant loss in the snooker community.
