“Labubu Dolls Recalled for Choking Hazard”

Published:

Labubu dolls have been withdrawn from the market just before the holiday season due to safety concerns that they could pose a serious risk of choking and strangulation for children. These brightly colored toy monsters, known for their furry bodies and playful expressions, are subject to urgent recall notices as loose parts have raised alarms over potential dangers to young kids.

The popularity of Labubus has surged, becoming a sought-after children’s craze of the year. Celebrity endorsements from figures like Rihanna, David Beckham, Kim Kardashian, Gemma Collins, and Olivia Attwood have further fueled the frenzy. Originally a hit in China, Labubus gained global attention after K-pop star Lalisa Manobal from Blackpink shared images of them on social media.

The Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) issued recall notices for three Labubu products just days before Christmas. The Brown Plushie Labubu, flagged as counterfeit, is marked as a significant choking and strangulation hazard. The safety report identifies that the zip pull can detach, creating small parts that could lead to choking risks for young children. The products have been confiscated from the distributor for disposal, and consumers are advised to discontinue use immediately.

Another recall has been initiated for a green Labubu-style plush toy featuring a spinning tail pull cord. The OPSS highlights a choking risk due to the potential detachment of the keyring attachment and right foot.

Likewise, the brown Labubu-style wrist strap toy has been recalled for safety concerns. The eyes on the toy can easily detach, posing a serious choking hazard for children. Additionally, the toy contains a battery pack in its head that is easily accessible. The product lacks age warnings and the necessary markings and labeling requirements as per OPSS guidelines.

The local distributor has removed the affected toys from sale, as confirmed by the OPSS. The Chartered Trading Standards Institute has issued guidance for consumers uncertain about the authenticity of their Labubu toys.
