“Asda Plans Over 150 Job Cuts Amid Holiday Sales Decline”

Published:

A leading supermarket is considering over 150 job cuts due to a disappointing holiday season. Asda is aiming to reduce expenses and streamline operations following a subpar Christmas performance that saw a decrease in festive sales by 4.2% and a drop in market share to 11.4%.

The proposed restructuring involves slashing more than 80 management positions and impacting several warehouse employees. In contrast, Tesco and Sainsbury’s experienced sales growth during the same period.

The exact number of job losses is still uncertain, but Asda has initiated redundancy consultations. The GMB trade union is actively supporting affected members through collective discussions and individual meetings at distribution facilities.

Asda is planning to optimize transport operations by establishing regional hubs and enhancing parcel-handling with the help of Evri to meet the high demand for processing 28 million parcels annually.

According to an Asda spokesperson, the reorganization aims to enhance efficiency by eliminating redundant tasks, enhancing regional adaptability, standardizing operational procedures, and reducing dependence on temporary staff.

A leaked memo to workers revealed Asda’s decision to reduce the number of regional managers from 30 to 22, emphasizing the necessity for change despite the challenges and staff reductions.

This move comes after Asda faced backlash for a previous round of abrupt layoffs without prior consultations. As the third largest UK supermarket chain, Asda continues to navigate challenges in a competitive market environment.
