Ex-jockey Luke Tarrant detained on armed robbery charges

Published:

A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained on three armed robbery charges and denied bail during his court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia. The charges include robbery while armed, entering premises with intent to commit a crime, and possession of dangerous drugs, with severe penalties up to 14 years in prison. Tarrant, who has a history in horse racing with 502 wins, is set to reappear in court on March 19.

In recent times, Tarrant faced a six-month ban in 2020 for headbutting a fellow jockey and a one-year disqualification in October for failing to cooperate in an inquiry regarding health assessment forms. The case was escalated to the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission, where Tarrant failed to respond to directives for plea submissions, leading to the imposed 12-month disqualification from racing starting from October 8, 2025.

The Commission panel emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity within the sport and the obligation of licensed individuals to cooperate with investigations. Stewards determined that the disqualification was warranted due to Tarrant’s actions undermining the welfare of participants and public trust in racing. The disqualification period is set to last until October 8, 2026.
