North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, recently unveiled an imposing 8,700-ton nuclear-powered submarine, sending a foreboding message to neighboring countries. The North Korean dictator proudly showcased the progress made in constructing the massive submersible vessel during a visit to a shipyard. He emphasized the submarine’s significance in modernizing and strengthening his country’s naval capabilities.
The submarine, part of North Korea’s plan to develop a “strategic guided missile submarine” armed with nuclear weapons, was a focal point of Jong-un’s visit to the shipyard. He used the opportunity to criticize South Korea for its alleged offensive actions in attempting to acquire similar technology. The dictator condemned South Korea’s efforts, supported by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which he claimed violated North Korea’s security and maritime sovereignty.
Kim Jong-un hailed the completion of the nuclear-powered submarine as a pivotal moment in enhancing North Korea’s nuclear deterrent against perceived threats. Images from the visit depicted the leader standing next to the massive vessel, painted in a distinctive burgundy color for anti-corrosion protection.
Accompanied by his daughter and senior officials, Jong-un’s visit marked the first publicized images of the submarine since earlier in the year. While the exact progress of the submarine’s construction remains undisclosed, the visible hull completion suggests that critical components such as the engine or reactor may already be in place.
The nuclear-powered submarine was just one of the advanced weaponry items Kim Jong-un announced as essential for North Korea’s defense during a recent political conference. Alongside the submarine, the dictator expressed the need for solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, spy satellites, and multi-warhead missiles.
The potential capabilities of the new nuclear submarine, including stealth operations and underwater missile launches, pose concerns for neighboring nations. Such covert actions could be challenging to detect in advance, heightening regional security tensions.
Kim Jong-un’s frequent public appearances with his daughter have garnered attention, as she accompanied him to various high-profile events, including a Chinese military parade. Kim Ju Ae, previously a mystery to the public until her existence was revealed in 2013, has now become a visible figure in her father’s official engagements.
