Britain is prepared to assist its allies in intercepting Russian shadow ships that are providing financial support to Vladimir Putin’s military efforts, according to the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper has pledged to enhance the pressure on Russia’s clandestine fleet, which consists of deteriorating oil tankers operating under false flags to avoid Western sanctions. The aim is to take more decisive action against these vessels, which are channeling funds to the Kremlin for the purpose of conducting warfare in Ukraine and damaging crucial undersea cables.
While British forces aided the US in a daring operation to seize a tanker linked to Russia last month for violating oil sanctions in Venezuela, no British personnel have yet boarded any of these ships. However, officials are reportedly assessing the legal grounds for potential military intervention.
During her visit to Helsinki, Ms. Cooper boarded a patrol vessel and met with members of the Finnish Border Guard, who play a key role in defending against Russian threats along Finland’s 830-mile border. The Turva patrol ship was involved in a raid on a Russian-affiliated vessel accused of sabotaging undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland in December.
In an interview with the Mirror, the Foreign Secretary emphasized the need for more robust action against the Russian shadow fleet due to their detrimental impact on sanctions, the conflict in Ukraine, environmental concerns, and national security.
Ms. Cooper expressed readiness to conduct enforcement operations against the shadow fleet, highlighting the importance of collaboration with international partners to intensify pressure on these vessels. She also called for a complete ban on the transportation of Russian oil to cut off a crucial source of funding for Moscow.
The UK is closely monitoring enforcement actions taken by European allies against illicit vessels, particularly in the Baltic Sea and off the coast of France, as suggested by Ms. Cooper.
Furthermore, Ms. Cooper observed a demonstration by the Finnish Border Guards on vessel seizures, showcasing their ability to swiftly intervene using military force when necessary. This approach serves as a strong deterrent against rogue vessels, with Finland maintaining the authority to act decisively when faced with potential threats.
Recent years have seen a concerning rise in Russian vessels operating near the UK, prompting Defense Secretary John Healey to issue a warning to Putin following an incident involving a Russian spy ship, the Yantar, shining lasers at RAF pilots outside UK waters.
The Foreign Secretary underscored the determination to tighten the grip on the Russian shadow fleet and Putin’s actions, emphasizing the commitment to safeguard national security within UK waters.
During her visit, Ms. Cooper engaged in discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb as part of a two-day tour of the Arctic Circle region, where security concerns have escalated following discussions around the potential annexation of Greenland.
The heightened focus on security in the High North comes in response to President Trump’s assertions regarding the need to control Greenland to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence over the region.
