The top cities for first-time homebuyers have been unveiled, with a Scottish destination leading the pack for the fourth consecutive year.
Glasgow has once again claimed the number one spot in the Aldermore First-Time Buyer (FTB) Appeal Index.
This ranking considers not only property prices and down payments but also factors crucial to first-time buyers like commute times, local amenities, and the presence of young residents.
Glasgow emerged as the best city with an average initial home price of £168,828 and an average deposit of £31,856. It also boasts an anticipated yearly price surge of 6.8%. In comparison, the average house price in the UK stands at £269,000 as per official data.
Additionally, Glasgow stands out for having the highest percentage of 25 to 35-year-olds among all cities, a thriving local business scene, and expanding job opportunities.
However, other Scottish urban areas have slipped in the rankings. Dundee, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh have been overtaken by predominantly northern English cities, with Liverpool and Newcastle securing second and third positions respectively.
Southern commuter towns and coastal locations continue to be less affordable, with Maidstone, Basildon, Southend, and Chelmsford ranking at the bottom of the list.
Jon Cooper, Aldermore’s mortgages director, commented, “For the fourth consecutive year, Glasgow leads as the prime city for first-time buyers, while northern cities maintain a strong presence in our rankings.
“Despite ongoing affordability issues, especially in southern England, our study reveals opportunities for those ready to enter the property market for the first time.
