Google to End Chrome Support for Older Macs; Urges macOS Upgrade

Published:

Google has announced that it will no longer provide support for its Chrome browser on older versions of Apple’s macOS platform. While Chrome will still function on MacBooks and iMacs, users will not receive updates or security patches, potentially leaving them more vulnerable to cyber threats.

Users with Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier will no longer receive Chrome updates. To continue using Chrome securely, affected users must upgrade to a newer operating system like macOS Ventura. However, some older Mac models, such as iMacs predating 2017 and MacBook Airs purchased before 2018, may not be compatible with Ventura, necessitating the purchase of a new device.

The changes are set to take effect from July this year. Google confirmed that Chrome version 150 is the final release supporting macOS 12 (Monterey), with Chrome version 151, scheduled for July 28, 2026, requiring macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users are advised to ensure their devices are running macOS 13 or newer to receive future Chrome updates.

While older versions of Chrome will still function on unsupported operating systems, no further updates will be issued. Google urges users on macOS 12 (Monterey) to transition to a supported macOS version, like macOS 13 Ventura, to receive the latest security updates and Chrome features.
