Newly surfaced video footage shows Anthony Joshua escaping from a car involved in a crash that resulted in the death of two individuals in Nigeria.
Reports indicate that the ex-heavyweight champion was in a Jeep on Monday, December 29 when it collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria. This incident occurred in the southwest region of the country, where Joshua’s parents are from. He had been in Nigeria following his recent victory over Jake Paul in a boxing match just over a week ago.
According to a local news source, Joshua was seated in the back of the vehicle during the crash and sustained minor injuries. He was subsequently taken to an undisclosed hospital, while the local police commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Following the crash, bystanders, including Joshua, provided assistance to those involved. Video footage has emerged showing Joshua being helped out of the back seat of the vehicle he was traveling in.
In the video, the 36-year-old appeared to be in pain as he was assisted out of the vehicle after the crash.
Local reports on the incident involving Joshua suggest that the vehicle veered into the stationary truck after a tire blowout, causing the driver to lose control.
Eyewitnesses, including Adeniyi Orojo, recounted the events to Punch Newspaper, stating: “It was a two-vehicle convoy consisting of a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver with another individual beside him. There was also a passenger next to the driver, making a total of four occupants in the Lexus during the crash. Joshua’s security personnel were in the vehicle following them prior to the accident.
“Upon the crash, other witnesses and I assisted in the rescue efforts, signaling approaching vehicles for help. Shortly after the collision, officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived on the scene. Tragically, the passenger next to the driver and the individual beside Joshua died immediately.”
Mirror Sport reached out to Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, who was unaware of the incident as he was on vacation in the Caribbean. Hearn confirmed that Joshua was safe and en route to the hospital but had no further details to provide.
This incident occurred shortly before the start of the new year, with Joshua hinting at significant plans for the upcoming year as he reignited his rivalry with Tyson Fury.
In a post on Instagram following his recent victory over Paul on December 19, Joshua expressed gratitude to his supporters and teased upcoming developments in the New Year.
