Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria is set to face charges for ‘reckless driving’ following a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates. The individual, a 47-year-old member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, is expected to be formally charged within the next 48 hours, according to reports.
After being discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve, the driver was moved to Abeokuta in Ogun state, where the crash occurred. He underwent questioning for several hours and provided an official statement detailing the events leading up to the accident, which claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s dear friends.
Joshua, who has also been released from the hospital, accompanied his mother in paying respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home before their repatriation to the UK. A police source mentioned that the driver, after receiving treatment for minor injuries, was taken to the state police headquarters for interrogation. It is anticipated that a charging decision for reckless driving will be made within the next two days.
The incident involved Joshua traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck, who fled the scene, has been declared wanted by the authorities. According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, a spokesperson for Ogun State’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, overspeeding and a burst front tire on the SUV Joshua was in led to the loss of control and subsequent collision with the parked truck.
Eddie Hearn, chairman of Joshua’s promotional company Matchroom, expressed his condolences for Ghami and Ayodele, calling them “two great men” in a heartfelt Instagram post. Sky has announced a reduced price for its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, offering substantial savings and an increased number of live matches for viewers.
