“Alarming Data Reveals 76% of Car Thefts Unsolved”

Recent statistics have shown that a significant number of car theft cases remain unresolved, with three out of four incidents left unsolved in the past year.

According to data from the House of Commons library, a concerning 76% of car thefts went unsolved in the previous year. The Metropolitan police had the lowest success rate, with 88% of cases remaining unsolved. Other police forces such as the British Transport Police, South Yorkshire, City of London, Sussex, and Warwickshire also reported high rates of unsolved car thefts, with over 80% of cases unresolved.

Vehicle crime saw a 12% decrease in the year leading to June 2025, with a 7% drop in vehicle theft. To combat this issue, new legislation is being introduced to outlaw electronic tools that can bypass car security systems, with offenders facing up to five years in prison.

In response to the rising car theft rates, the Liberal Democrats have proposed the establishment of a specialized team at the National Crime Agency. This team would leverage data from automatic number plate recognition cameras, insurance records, and police intelligence to target organized car crime networks.

Max Wilkinson MP, the Lib Dem home affairs spokesman, criticized the lack of support for crime victims and called for stronger government action. He emphasized the need to address the failures in policing, highlighting the detrimental impact of budget cuts on law enforcement.
