“Greenland Situation Unresolved Despite Trump’s Pledge”

Published:

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has cautioned that the situation concerning Greenland remains unresolved despite US President Donald Trump’s pledge not to resort to force for its acquisition.

Stubb acknowledged Trump’s efforts to de-escalate tensions after his address at Davos, outlining three possible outcomes as reported by Euronews: a positive resolution involving NATO cooperation to enhance Arctic security, a negative scenario of ongoing trade disputes, and a worst-case scenario of military intervention.

Expressing relief at Trump’s commitment to refrain from military action, Stubb emphasized that while a de-escalation has occurred, the issue is still ongoing.

Trump’s recent remarks at the World Economic Forum, where he appeared to misidentify Greenland and Iceland, raised concerns. He asserted the strategic importance of Greenland for national and international security, emphasizing the US’s responsibility to safeguard the region.

While indicating a desire for negotiations regarding Greenland’s acquisition, Trump ruled out military action, stating a preference for peaceful resolutions.

Ahead of the recent meeting, Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed his position on Greenland’s sovereignty, emphasizing that decisions regarding the island should rest with its people and Denmark, rejecting any use of tariffs as leverage.
