“Potentially Catastrophic Winter Storm Threatens 160 Million”

Published:

A new storm with potential catastrophic impact is expected to hit parts of the United States before the weekend, bringing life-threatening cold air that could result in snow and ice affecting approximately 160 million people. The storm is anticipated to move from Texas to the Carolinas, potentially causing power outages as ice accumulation could burden trees and power lines. Forecasts suggest certain regions could receive more than 12 inches of snow along with sleet and hazardous freezing rain.

Weather experts have labeled this event as a widespread and potentially catastrophic occurrence from Texas to the Carolinas. Ryan Maue, a former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, expressed concerns about the severity of the upcoming weather conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) also predicts frigid temperatures and hazardous conditions spreading across 30 states, affecting a vast population with temperatures dropping significantly below freezing in some areas.

The Northern Plains are expected to experience the most extreme wind chills, reaching as low as -46C or -50F, while the southeastern U.S. is also poised for sub-zero temperatures. The NWS has issued warnings about life-threatening risks of hypothermia and frostbite due to the severe wind chills. Meanwhile, snow showers are affecting the southern Great Lakes region along the U.S.-Canada border.

Residents are advised to prepare for substantial snow accumulation exceeding 12 inches in various states from Colorado to West Virginia, upstate New York, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Indiana. Southern states may face freezing rain, potentially causing tree damage, power outages, and localized flooding.

Forecasters highlight the uncertainty in pinpointing the exact locations that might be impacted by ice accumulation. Keith Avery, CEO of the Newberry Electric Cooperative in South Carolina, emphasized the catastrophic effects of even a small amount of ice accumulation. The situation remains unpredictable, and preparedness is crucial for residents in the affected regions.
