EE mobile users are being cautioned about a recurring scam text message, as per cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender. The message falsely notifies EE customers of imminent loss of thousands of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.
Bitdefender advises recipients to be wary of messages claiming that a substantial number of EE reward points will expire soon. The cybersecurity experts caution that such messages are likely fraudulent. Cybercriminals are posing as EE to entice individuals into clicking on malicious links that lead to counterfeit websites aimed at stealing login credentials for financial gain.
The success of this scam lies in creating a sense of urgency, hoping that users will act hastily without thinking. Bitdefender explains that scammers employ a tactic of setting tight deadlines to create the illusion of impending loss to manipulate individuals. The provided links do not direct users to EE’s official site but instead lead to fake platforms.
Genuine EE alerts will only be visible within official EE accounts and not in unsolicited texts. Users are advised to treat any message pressuring quick action or featuring a countdown with suspicion. Any dubious texts should be forwarded to 7726 and then promptly deleted.
Similar scams targeting EE customers have been reported previously. In January of this year, users received deceptive messages regarding reward points, leading to some falling victim to the scam.
EE has clarified that they do not offer a points program and has shared examples of scam messages, including those urging users to redeem points within a limited timeframe.
EE’s latest guidance emphasizes:
– Avoid clicking on unknown links in text messages
– Refrain from responding to suspicious messages
– Do not call back the number from which the message was sent
– Never disclose personal or financial information
EE users are advised to remain vigilant against such fraudulent activities.
