The pop music queen is set to reclaim her throne. Madonna, an iconic figure at the MTV Video Music Awards, has emerged as the top nominee this year, surpassing Taylor Swift. With 11 nominations for the upcoming ceremony, Madonna’s recognition stems from her acclaimed album “Confessions II” and its accompanying film.
Outshining Taylor Swift, who holds the record for the most VMA wins as a solo artist, Madonna secured nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video “The Fate of Ophelia.” Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, each with seven nominations.
This year marks Madonna’s third time leading the VMA nominations, having previously dominated in 1990 and 1998 with her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. Her most memorable VMA moment dates back to the inaugural 1984 ceremony when she stunned audiences with a daring performance of “Like a Virgin,” pushing the boundaries of cable television.
Among Madonna’s nominations are video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring fellow nominee Carpenter. In the highly coveted video of the year category, “Confessions” faces tough competition from Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
Voting for 13 categories is open to the public, and the winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
