Cineplex has announced the appointment of Bill Walker as the new CEO and hinted at a possible sale. The company’s board is optimistic about its future but is exploring various options to enhance shareholder value. To this end, a Strategic Review has been initiated, which may include a potential sale of the company.
Goldman Sachs and TD Securities have been enlisted as co-financial advisers for the strategic review process. Cineplex, known as the largest cinema chain in Canada, operates over 1,600 movie screens across nearly 170 theaters nationwide and employs more than 10,000 individuals in its entertainment venues.
In 2019, Cineplex was previously involved in a failed $2.8 billion acquisition deal with Cineworld Group PLC from the U.K. Former CEO Ellis Jacob will now act as a special adviser during this strategic review phase.
Cineplex’s board chair, Phyllis Yaffe, highlighted the company’s strong market position and leading entertainment assets, expressing a belief that the current market valuation may not fully reflect its business strength and long-term potential.
Bill Walker, the newly appointed CEO, formerly led Landmark Cinemas and oversaw its sale to Kinepolis in 2017. He has voiced support for the strategic review and emphasized a commitment to operational excellence, outstanding guest experiences, and maximizing shareholder value regardless of the review’s outcome.
