An acclaimed bed and breakfast (B&B) along with a café has shut down, delivering a significant blow to the local community. The owner attributed the closure to the challenging location, which led to a lack of foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations on Friday after a successful run of two and a half years catering to what the owner, Sonya Resemblance, described as “wonderful people.” This was reported by The Sun.
This closure is part of a broader crisis affecting pubs and hospitality establishments in Britain, as a multitude of them face closure annually due to escalating costs and evolving consumer habits, causing strain within the industry.
For instance, the beloved White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield recently closed permanently. Pub owners had previously cautioned that the pub sector was at risk of decline due to substantial cost increases, with 300 pubs closing in the initial quarter of 2025.
Only a few weeks before shutting down, the business was recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards. Since taking over the inn in July 2023, Sonya Resemblance had been offering brunch, lunch, and popular Sunday roasts to locals, while also creating employment opportunities, training initiatives, and organizing events to enhance mental well-being.
Moreover, the establishment received two prestigious Norfolk awards at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards, winning titles for Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year.
A noteworthy aspect of the business was its entirely gluten-free menu, a point of pride for Sonya, who aimed to provide safe dining options for individuals facing dietary challenges.
In the announcement of the closure, Sonya expressed gratitude to patrons for their support and mentioned the business’s contributions to job creation, training opportunities, and the provision of essential social spaces that are crucial for mental health.
While acknowledging the difficulties faced by the retail and hospitality sectors, Sonya emphasized the business’s determination to overcome challenges. Despite efforts from loyal customers to support the business, Sonya confirmed the closure on Friday, January 16, eliciting an outpouring of supportive messages.
One customer conveyed their sadness over the closure, appreciating the establishment for providing a delightful meeting place and exceptional food, expressing hope for a potential return in the future.
