Coco Gauff Reacts to Racket-Smashing Incident

Published:

Coco Gauff has hinted at the possibility of addressing the incident where she was seen smashing her racket after exiting the Australian Open. The third seed faced a tough 6-1 6-2 defeat against Elina Svitolina in the quarter-final match, lasting less than an hour, and sought a private spot away from the court to release her frustrations.

Despite her efforts to keep her emotions secluded, the moment of Gauff destroying her racket was captured on camera, prompting the young player to question the diminishing privacy for athletes at major tournaments when such moments are broadcasted.

The video of Gauff venting her emotions by smashing her racket on the ground quickly gained attention online and was immediately televised. When asked about the incident, the 21-year-old player acknowledged, “Yeah, I tried to go somewhere where there was no cameras.”

Gauff expressed her discomfort with certain moments being broadcasted, citing a similar experience with another player, Aryna Sabalenka, in a previous tournament. She hoped to express her emotions privately without realizing the presence of cameras everywhere. Gauff suggested that discussions might be necessary to address such situations, as she feels the only private space available during the tournament is the locker room.

Although the footage of Gauff’s outburst caused a commotion, it allowed the third seed to release her frustrations before regrouping with her team. When questioned about the impact of this release on her post-match mindset, Gauff responded positively, stating that it helped her prevent taking out her emotions on her team members due to her emotional nature.

Known for her resilience, Gauff struggled to recover after Svitolina took an early lead and couldn’t elevate her performance. Reflecting on the match, Gauff admitted that she wasn’t able to execute her usual strengths during the game and credited her opponent for forcing her to play below her capabilities. Despite the defeat, Gauff acknowledged the importance of venting her emotions constructively to avoid negative interactions with others.
