“Alabama Dentist Sentenced to 180 Years for Heinous Crimes”

Published:

A dentist, Joseph Clarence Cox, has been sentenced to 180 years in prison for heinous crimes, including rape, sodomy, and sexual abuse of both staff and patients at his dental clinic. Cox’s conviction came after a local jury found him guilty, leading to a severe punishment handed down by the judge.

The Deputy District Attorney of Etowah County, Carol Griffith, disclosed that Cox’s arrest followed a thorough investigation by the Gadsden Police Department in Alabama in April 2021. During the trial, it was revealed that there was a significant turnover of staff from June 2020 to April 2021 due to Cox’s inappropriate sexual conduct towards employees.

Former employees testified about multiple instances of sexual abuse by Cox during working hours, with some incidents escalating to forcible rape and sodomy. Additionally, three former patients came forward, stating that Cox had sexually assaulted them while performing dental procedures.

Cox was found guilty of two counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sodomy, and eight counts of first-degree sexual abuse after a week-long trial. This conviction came after Cox had previously admitted to harassment charges in 2012, resulting in a probation sentence and a temporary suspension of his dental license.

During the sentencing, Circuit Judge George Day condemned Cox for his actions, describing his workplace behavior as disrespectful and predatory towards women. Cox received a 25-year prison term for each count of first-degree rape and sodomy, along with a ten-year state prison sentence for each charge of first-degree sexual abuse, to be served consecutively.

The judge emphasized that consecutive sentences were necessary to serve justice to the victims, ultimately resulting in Cox being sentenced to a total of 180 years in prison for his abhorrent actions.
