Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team secured a strong start in the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament by defeating Senegal 72-57 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Kayla Alexander led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds, supported by Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb who contributed 13 points each.
Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their toughness and solid rebounding against the formidable Senegal squad. Canada dominated the offensive boards with a 15-8 advantage, with Tara Wallack notably grabbing four offensive rebounds to create extra scoring opportunities.
Swords made an early impact with three three-pointers in the first quarter, helping Canada establish a commanding lead that they maintained throughout the game. Despite Senegal’s push in the third quarter, Canada’s strong presence in the paint, shooting efficiency, and even points off turnovers secured the victory.
The team will have a day off before their next match against the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
