The latest stage of scratchings for the prestigious Grand National has seen ten horses withdrawn from contention, reducing the field to 34 contenders set to compete at the Aintree racecourse. Since 2024, the field size for the Grand National has been capped at 34 horses, down from the previous 40, providing insight into the potential lineup for the race on April 11. Notable withdrawals include Gold Cup competitor Grey Dawning, Bet365 Gold Cup winner Resplendent Grey, and Gentlemansgame.
Seven additional horses have been scratched, including charges from Gordon Elliott such as Western Fold, Croke Park, Better Days Ahead, and Search For Glory. Ben Pauling removed Handstands and Pic Roc, while Anthony Honeyball took out Leave of Absence.
Among the remaining field of 34, the favorites include Willie Mullins’ duo of 2024 winner I Am Maximus and Bobbyjo Chase winner Grangeclare West, who finished third in the previous year’s race. The lineup may see further changes as some horses might opt to compete in the Irish National on April 6, with Oscars Brother currently leading the market.
A potential contender to watch is the Welsh and Irish National winner Haiti Couleurs, trained by Rebecca Curtis. The gelding, who recently competed in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, is being prepared for the Aintree race pending fitness checks.
