Mongolia, a country unfamiliar to 90% of the global population, faced a significant challenge in attracting tourists. Nomin Chinbat, the former Mongolian Culture and Tourism Minister, together with Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene, worked to address this issue.
A survey in 2018 by Edelman revealed that only 10% of people recognized Mongolia as an independent country, with some mistaking it for a part of China. This lack of awareness posed a hurdle to the government’s efforts to boost tourism and diversify the economy beyond mining.
Moreover, Mongolia’s reputation for extreme cold and air pollution due to coal burning added to the negative perceptions. The country witnessed around 7,000 deaths from air pollution in one winter and 881 fatalities from carbon monoxide poisoning over seven years.
Despite these challenges, Nomin aimed to reshape perceptions, particularly regarding Genghis Khan, emphasizing his role as a peacemaker and innovator. The Mongolian government sought to highlight present-day cultural offerings, such as The Hu band, blending traditional Mongolian elements with modern music.
The nomadic lifestyle, a cornerstone of Mongolian heritage dating back centuries, continues to draw interest. Approximately 40% of Mongolians lead nomadic lives, residing in portable dwellings known as gers. The vast, sparsely populated country offers a unique experience with diverse landscapes from the Altai Mountains to the Gobi Desert.
Mongolia has seen a rise in tourism, with efforts to increase visitor numbers and improve accessibility through partnerships and enhanced flight connections. While challenges remain, including limited direct flights from the UK, the country’s global recognition and soft power have been on the rise, indicating promising growth in the tourism sector.
Nomin expressed optimism for Mongolia’s tourism future, highlighting the country’s sustainable growth policies and potential for further expansion. With ongoing initiatives and increasing global awareness, Mongolia is poised to become a sought-after destination for adventurous travelers.
