Search teams have successfully located the remains of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering team that tragically perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was made by a group of local volunteers, confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural endeavor to climb an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, the 39-year-old Geis had shared on social media earlier this year her decision to close her Pilates studio and embark on a new journey filled with uncertainty. Her family described her as a cherished individual who illuminated the lives of those around her in a statement released earlier this month.
The search for Geis began on July 31 following the avalanche that engulfed the expedition, led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier from Nepal, gained fame for conquering the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record-breaking 189 days back in 2019, a feat that was documented in the Netflix film “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” It is worth noting that his record was surpassed in 2023.
Incidents like avalanches, falling debris, extreme altitudes, and unpredictable weather patterns pose significant risks on climbing expeditions in the northern regions of Pakistan.
