Wetherspoon has launched its inaugural pub in Europe, situated at Alicante airport in Spain. This new branch is expected to attract a significant number of British travelers heading to popular destinations like Benidorm.
The pub, named Castell de Santa Bàrbera, offers a diverse menu that includes traditional English breakfast items such as fried eggs, bacon, sausage, and baked beans at a price of 10.25 euros (approximately £8.94). While some menu items differ from the usual Wetherspoon offerings, the pub aims to cater to homesick Brits, providing a taste of familiar comfort.
Founder Tim Martin expressed enthusiasm about the new venture, hinting at potential future openings abroad, including at airports. The pub operates daily from 6 am to 9 pm and features a spacious customer area along with an outdoor terrace for seating.
With a focus on partnerships with franchise operators, Wetherspoon plans to expand its presence overseas, marking a significant shift from its previous strategy of primarily operating in the UK and Ireland. The opening of the Alicante pub aligns with the company’s ambitious plans to establish approximately 30 pubs in the upcoming year, creating job opportunities and expanding its reach in the hospitality industry.
