“Virgin Media O2 to Phase Out 2G Network by 2029”

Published:

Despite the widespread adoption of high-speed 4G and 5G networks in new smartphones, the older 2G network is still in use throughout the UK. Introduced in 1993, this aging technology continues to support certain devices like phones, alarms, and health equipment.

However, the days of 2G are numbered, as Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to phase out this network by 2029, following the discontinuation of 3G. This move is part of the company’s strategy to modernize its infrastructure and enhance future connectivity.

The transition signifies a significant advancement in network development, enabling Virgin Media O2 to redirect investments towards expanding and enhancing its 4G and 5G services. The anticipated upgrades aim to deliver quicker speeds, more reliable connections, and reduced energy consumption, aligning with consumer expectations and demands.

Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, stated, “We are committing £700 million this year to revolutionize our mobile network and ensure it meets the escalating consumer requirements. By phasing out the outdated 2G network, we can focus on delivering dependable and efficient 4G and 5G services to all our customers.”

Having recently decommissioned the 3G network and endorsed the government’s 2G switch-off initiative, Virgin Media O2 is well-prepared for the transition. While most users will experience a seamless shift, some businesses may need to start planning for the network upgrade now.

The scheduled shutdown in 2029 allows customers and enterprises ample time to prepare and update any devices reliant on 2G technology, marking the end of an era in mobile communications.

First introduced in the UK in 1993, 2G has been a cornerstone of mobile communication for years, offering reliable voice calls and text messaging with extensive coverage. Despite the advancements in 4G and 5G networks providing faster data speeds, 2G remains essential for its reliability, energy efficiency, and broad coverage.

As the demand for enhanced mobile services grows, Virgin Media O2’s shift away from 2G will enable a focused approach on advancing connectivity for the next generation of networks, aligning with evolving technological needs.
